Six figure refurbishment under way at rear of Dundas Shopping Centre

Work has started on a six figure project to refurbish the Wilson Street entrance to Middlesbrough’s Dundas Shopping Centre.
The entrance doors, surrounding cladding, signage and entrance mats will be replaced and improved, as well as the areas above entrance to the basement car park accessed from Wilson Street.
Business will continue as usual in the shopping centre during the eight week long contract, carried by Darlington contractor Wharton Construction, to designs by the Middlesbrough office of Logic Architecture, with occasional closures to the rear entrance and car park for essential work which will be limited to weekends only. This £130,000 investment will also include cleaning the stonework above a vacant shop unit on the corner of Wilson Street and Dundas Street, once the home to one the earliest branches of Darlington Building Society in Middlesbrough, following internal refurbishments carried out late last year.
“These works will greatly improve the rear entrance to Dundas Shopping Centre and make it more welcoming to shoppers, office workers in Dundas House, and to prospective new tenants,” says Richard Wilson, Senior Associate at Middlesbrough-based Dodds Brown, letting and managing agents for Dundas Shopping Centre and Indoor Market.
“The refurbishment is the first phase of works designed to improve this entrance to the shopping centre and will help us to attract an operator to the 12,000 of sq ft of vacant space available on the first floor of the shopping centre, in the former Potter’s Club.
“The space already has planning permission for a gym and for other D2 uses, such as bowling, a Sports Bar, an events space, or a craft centre, as there is a shortage of town centre leisure provision.”
The 600 sq ft shop unit on the corner of Wilson Street and Dundas Street is also available to rent through Dodds Brown.
“There is a real history to this shop. It was here long before the Dundas Shopping Centre which was the original site of Middlesbrough’s Winter Garden,” continues Mr Wilson.
“It would suit a small independent retailer looking to benefit from being part of the community of independent traders in Dundas Market and Shopping Centre.”
